“You guys got a band starting?” I asked.
“Well, Max is trying to start a band with James . I'm
just gonna write about it. He wants me to play drums but I don’t play.” Anna said.
“Except you have your brother’s drums in your basement.”
James said
“I play clarinet.
That doesn’t really translate to percussion. Besides, have you ever seen a girl drummer?” Anna said.
“Why not? Be the first!” I said.
“David's got a point.” James said.
“Ugh. That’s what
everyone says. I just don’t know if it’s
what I want to do.” Anna said.
“What do you like to do?” I asked
“Well, I write and I like doing that, but I don’t think I
can make a living writing my stupid zine.
At least that’s what my mom keeps telling me.”
“Well, lets be honest, old world mom doesn’t understand what
new world Anna wants to do.” James said
“I think you can do whatever you want.” I said
“Alright, enough of this.
The bands might be trying to figure out how to set up snare drum.” Anna
said, looking annoyed with the conversation.
Anna walked a little ahead of us. I felt bad
pushing the point but I felt it was true. She shouldn't be restricted to doing
whatever she wanted to do. It was almost the nineties and women were already
doing a lot of things that were once considered men's only.
“Don't fret over that David. She can get touchy about this
stuff, but she'll get over it.” James said. “All of our parents are from the
old country, so they think we should be doctors and lawyers and get married and
have babies.”
“Old country?” I asked
“Poland.” James answered “Except Alex’s parents. His grandparents are from over there.”
“So are you sure Anna isn’t mad?” I asked
“Yeah, she’s fine.” James answered “There’s more to it than
that. Our date tonight got fucked up by Max
and Alex.”
“I hope. I just met you guys and I don't want you all pissed
off at me. You guys are great.”
“You know, Anna and I at first thought you were kind of a
poser, but we were wrong. You're genuine. You're going have a lot of friends in
this circle.” James said.
“You're just saying that.” I said.
“You're genuine. That's why even Violet likes you and she
gives everyone a hard time.” He said.
“So Max is Violets cousin? Anna is she related to them?” I asked.
“No. I mean, she wishes Violet was her sister. Max and Anna
mind as well be related, but her real sister Diane is a skin byrd in the Terror
crew, you know, one of the skinhead gangs. Anna and Diane don't get along that
well. She almost wishes Violet was her sister. They look out for each other.”
James said.
At that point, we caught up to Anna who was about a block
away from Trax. She turned around and looked like her brooding over the drummer
thing was over. She handed me a piece of paper.
“Here. Don't let Your girlfriend see this. She's seems like
she’d have a bug up her ass about you
hanging out with punk rockers.”
I looked down and scribbled was Anna and James phone
numbers.
“ I consider us friends and I hope you do too, despite being
a Junior.” Anna said.
