Deep down, I knew they were all right. Jenny had changed. She
started hanging out with Charlotte and April at the beginning of her sophomore
year. Within a few months, she started to turn into the new wave girl she
thought she was. All her past interests faded and she became obsessed with
fashion and modeling because that’s what Charlotte was into. She looked better,
but the things I really liked about her had changed. As they talked, I started
thinking about one summer earlier when Jenny and I were riding our bikes down
by the forest preserve. We went to grade school together and she moved to
Elmwood Park to go to high school. Jenny still had long blond hair. She was
wearing a pink tank top and cuffed denim shorts. At the time, we were just
friends.
“Wait up, you’re riding too fast
David.” Jenny said.
“No I’m not.” I said feeling the
wind blow past my hair.
“Seriously, can we stop for a sec?”
Jenny said.
We both slowed down and eventually
stopped by a bench. It was a beautiful late summer day. We both sat down and
caught our breath. We talked a little about TV shows and video games and
laughed at this fat woman jogging.
“I can’t wait to start my Science
class this year. I really want to be a veterinarian one day.”
“I don’t know what I want to do. I
like to take pictures. I might try to join the photo club at Lane.” I said.
“That’ll be neat.” She said.
“Maybe one day I’ll be a famous
photographer and have my pictures in magazines.” I said.
“Oh, like National Geographic?”
Jenny said.
“Rolling Stone.” I said.
“Wayyyy cooler.” She giggled.
“Yeah, Rolling Stone.” I said
smirking.
“David, we’ve been friends for a while now.”
Jenny said.
“Yeah, it has been awhile.” I said.
“I have fun when I’m with you.” She
said smiling.
“Same here.” I said laying back on
the bench.
Jenny then leaned over and gave me
my first kiss. I felt flushed and dumbfounded.
“You kissed me?”
“I know.”
“How come?”
“I like you.”
“Wow.” I said touching my lips.
“Does this mean were like,
boyfriend and girlfriend?”
“It can.” She said almost gleeful.
“Ok.” I shrugged.
