I was leaning against my locker after school waiting for
James when Max came running over to me.
“Anna! Anna! Holy shit!”
“What??”
“I think Rusty’s a Nazi!”
I raised an eye brow at the statement and asked “Proof?”
“Well, first, iron cross and death skull patch. Second, red laces.”
“Maybe it’s poor fashion choices? You think that maybe he doesn’t know?” I
asked
“Either way, I’m worried that Diane’s gonna spot him and he
gets knifed or something.” Max said, concerned
“GUYS!” Alex yelled as he walked towards us with his
headphones on. “WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THIS NEW NOFX ALBUM.”
“Alex, take off your headphones.” Max said
“WHAT?” Alex yelled “I CAN’T HEAR YOU WITH MY…. Oh.” He
said, taking off his headphones.
“What are you babbling about?” I asked
“This new NOFX album.”
“What about it?” we both questioned
“It’s really different from their last one. I think Criminal What should sound like
this.” He said
“Whatever. We’re
talking about Rusty and how he’s a Nazi now.” Max said
“We don’t know that.” I defended
“RUSTY’S A NAZI?” Alex yelled
“SSHHH” we both gestured
“Oh, shit, sorry.
He’s a Nazi?” Alex whispered “I used to think that guy was kind of
cool.”
“Here he comes.” Max whispered
We played it cool, looking at him, trying to gesture some
sort of salutation.
“The fuck are you punks looking at?” He asked as he mean
mugged us.
“Sorry, the glare from your forehead is a little blinding.”
Alex said
Max smacked him and said “Dude!”
“You watch yourself.” He said pointing at Alex
“Yeah, that guy’s a Nazi.” Alex said
“Maybe he’s just having a bad day.”
“HEY RUSTY!” Alex yelled “ARE YOU WHITE POWER NOW?”
Rusty turned and sieg heiled at us and kept walking.
“See? All you had to
do is ask.” Alex said “Alright, I’m outta here.
My old man’s waiting for me, because as you know, I’m still grounded,
because someone was too busy rubbing out her boyfriend to wake me up.”
“You’re so fucking gross!
Take some responsibility for your own shit!” I snapped
“So touchy!” Alex laughed as he ran away.
I shook my head and rolled my eyes. From the other direction, James ran up, also
worked up.
“ANNA, MAX!” He yelled
“All the boys in my life are yelling today.” I said
“This is a big deal… well, two things are a big deal.” James
said
“What??” We both yelled
“Rusty! He’s…”
“A Nazi. We know!” we
both said
“Oh.” James said “Why am I always the last to know these
things?”
“What’s the other thing?” Max asked
“Well, uh, you know how I said I got a bunch of phone calls
from different drummers?” James said
“Yeah?” Max answered
“Well, about ten minutes ago, this kid wearing a Metallica
shirt came over and said that he saw my flier and wants to try out.”
“Metallica?” I asked
“I mean, yeah. I know. But, he says he can play fast and doesn’t
care what we play.”
“I’m up for giving him a shot. Maybe we can just have some of the ones who
don’t sound crazy or like pedophiles come by on Saturday?” Max said
“Look, I got band.
You guys do whatever it is you guys do.
I’ll call both of you tonight.” I stepped up on my tip toes to give
James a kiss, grabbed my clarinet, jacket and backpack and ran to the band
room.
