I Know More Than You

Later that night, Jenny and I were having one of our late night phone conversations. Mid way through her ongoing blurb about one of her friends, she noticed the record that I was playing in the background.

“Are you playing the Cure? What song is that?” She asked.
“It's called ‘M’ and it's on Seventeen Seconds.” I said proudly.
“When did you get that?”
“I picked up three records at Trax with Jason.” I said.
“Oh, so suddenly you know more about them than me?” She complained.
“You asked me about what I wasn’t listening to and I told you. Big deal.” I said.
“Probably one of those college aged clerks told you to buy those. Was it that death rocker chick?” Jenny said.
“Violet. Yeah it was her. She was helpful.”
“She probably wanted you to spend more. I heard she was a little weird anyway.”
“How so? By showing me a few records?”
“Ok. Never mind. I gotta go. Talk to you later. Love you.” She said.

She hung up before I could respond but that didn’t matter anyway. The record had finished during our little argument and I was curious about that cassette that Violet snuck in. It was an old copy of David Bowie’s ‘Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars.’ I went over and switched my stereo to TAPE and put the cassette in and hit play. I laid down on my bed and stared at the ceiling. I was mulling about Jenny for a second when the drums kicked in for the song ‘Five Years.’ Then I began to listen to Bowie’s voice and the lyrics. The song was a pivotal moment for me in my life. I had just realized that EVERYTHING I had begun listening to earlier that year MUST have been influenced by the songs on this record from the seventies. It all must go back to that! Bowie was a genius! God, Violet was on point! I glanced at my wall and realized I needed to put more posters up. I felt the change happening.
