I was lying on my bed, reading an issue of my favorite zine when the phone rang. I correctly assumed it was Max to tell me about whatever adventure he went on that day. After all, it was 10:30 PM and that was regular routine. One of us would call the other around now to talk about whatever stupid thing happened to us at school that day.
"Hello?" I asked
"ANNA! It's Max!" He yelled
"What's wrong?"
"I was down at Trax today and Spencer was playing this 7" by Operation Ivy!" Max yelled excitedly
"Operation who?" I asked
"Operation Ivy. It's like if the Specials played punk!" Max said "I totally bought it. I'm taping for you right now!"
He held the phone up to his stereo speaker and all I heard was distorted a guitar going *dinka dinka* and what sounded like drunk rambling.
"Doesn't that sound awesome??" He asked
"Yeah, great." I said sarcastically
"Alright, I gotta go flip the record" He said, hanging up the phone
He was right. The 7" was amazing and missing their one and only show in the Chicago area because it happened in the suburbs was the greatest tragedy of our 8th grade career.
