Adventurous

Darren walked back up to the front to straighten out a few things when a couple customers came in. It was a nerdy looking guy and this girl who was wearing Ray Bans.  She was short and slightly chubby. She had long brown hair with the sides buzzed. I noticed that she had a Love and Rockets pin on her biker jacket. She was wearing a striped sweater and a long gray skirt with oxford saddle shoes. She looked my direction a few times and suddenly, despite being with this guy, approached me. It was then that I remembered her from Medusas that first night I was there.I was trying not to think about Jenny.

“That’s a nice shirt. Purple looks nice on you.” She said.

“Oh. Thanks. I’m a little on the fence about it. I usually wear a lot of black.” I said.

“Consider it. It’s adventurous. I’m Norah, I think I’ve seen you a few times over at Medusas.” She said.

“I’m David. Nice to meet you. Medusas is my home away from home.” I said .

“I came in here looking for something in red. I don’t know if they have what I’m looking for.” She said.

“I stay away from red. I wore too much red when I was young.” I said trying to sound smooth.

“Red’s kinda of sexy, don’t ya think?” She said. revealing her beautiful green eyes.

“Maybe.” I said noticing Darren motioning me to bust a move.

“But purple is too.” She said.

“Uh, isn’t that your boyfriend over there?” I asked.

“Oh, no that’s my stepbrother Jacob. We just came down here from school to shop. He’s kind of into the guy at the counter.” She said.

“You mean, Darren?” I asked.

“Yeah. Jacob’s kind of shy but he’s got a boner for him.” She said.

“Well, Darren is a friend and I’m sure he’ll be easy to talk to.” I said.

“Wait, are you gay?”

“Oh no. He’s a friend. I’m not gay.” I said laughing.

“Oh good. Not that’s there’s anything wrong with gay people.” She said.

“Not at all. They should be treated all the same as everybody else.” I said.

“I like your thinking. There’s not too many people who think that way. And it’s crazy because it’s practically the nineties!” Norah said.

“Where’s home?” I asked.

“Skokie. Oakton and Crawford area. How about you?” She said.

“I’m in the boonies. Actually Belmont and Cumberland.” I said.

“Oh man, that’s out there.” She said.
“Yep.” I said.

Jacob walked back over to us and politely said hi. He seemed really shy. He nudged Norah that he wanted to go.

“Well, it was nice meeting you. I guess I’ll see you around Medusas.” She said.

“I’ll be there. Nice meeting you both.” I said.

“Bye, David.”

“Bye” I said.
