Spiriytus

That night, I was in the Alley waiting for Mars to get off work so that we can go over to Neo. We had heard that some skinhead fight was going on down the street and I figured Diane and them are starting shit again. That means more carnage and more cops will be around. I just want to go hang out after a long day at Trax.

“Holy shit, Violet. I think there’s thirty of those skinheads out there.” Mars said as he was putting on his coat.

“Like one big bald orgy. I can do without it.” I said.

“Still won’t talk to Diane?” Mars said.

“What the fuck for? She bought into that caveman shit. Whatever friendship we had was in the past. As long as she doesn’t start shit at the store, then I don’t care what the fuck she does anymore. “ I said.

“You could persuade her to leave Terror?” Mars said affectionately.

“Were you listening? I DON’T CARE ANYMORE.” I said making my point clear.

“All righty. Let’s go. Time to change the topic.” Mars said as he opened the door for me.

We walked back over to School and swung around Medusas to try to avoid the mess that was going on by Clark. As we were walking across Belmont, I saw Max, James, and David leaning up against Muskies. Max had a brown paper bag he was holding.

“Hey, what the fuck are you guys doing? There’s a war breaking out like a block away. You all need to get the fuck outta here!” I said.

“We are just fine my sweet cousin.” Max said slightly slurring his words.

“What the fuck you got in the bag?” I said grabbing it from him.

“Spirytus .” James said.

“C’mon Violet. We bought it to get uni- err David drunk. He’s having a bad night.” Max said.

I looked over at David and he looked like had a few. He obviously wasn’t a seasoned drinker.

“You’re gave him Polish moonshine, you jack ass?” I said slapping him across the head.

“He only took a couple shots. Besides he’s miserable. Jason’s out fighting with Terror, his other friend Rusty’s a Nazi, and his Jenny lied about being in the ‘burbs. I guess she accidentally took Ecstasy and is making out with everybody in the video room.” Max blurted out.

“Oh, yes , and David over here snuck out because he got grounded earlier in the week. You're a naughty, boy David.” James laughed along with Max.

“Jesus H Christ, David?” I said.

“Yup. I told my folks I got called in to work—BUT I’M NOT THERE!” David said obviously tipsy.

“How much of that shit did you drink?” I said.

“A wee bit.” David said laughing using his fingers to show how much.

I turned and looked at Mars shaking my head. Mars, pulled his sunglasses down and looked at me shaking his head too.
“A little more of that and he’ll be kissing the concrete.” Mars said.

“SHIT! YOU DUMB LITTLE FUCKERS.” I yelled at all of them.

“What?” Max said.

“Where’s Anna?” I asked.

“She’s still inside of Medusas safe and sound.” James said.

“You know, I really would like to kick all your asses right now.” I said.

“My night’s going great so fuck it.” David said bending over making Max and James laugh hysterically.

“Ok smart ass.” I said as I kicked him in the ass.

“Ouch.” David said rubbing his butt.

“I’m confiscating this. You two better get Anna and go home.” I said.

“Tracy and Silvia are with her too. She’s can’t leave…” Max said.

“WHATEVER. GO HOME.” I said.

“Party’s over. See ya later David.” James said strutting away.

“Mars, can we give David a ride home?”
“I don’t have to be home til 12:30. It’s now 11:15. Oh, damn it’s 11:15?” David said looking at his watch.

“David, shut up. Mars is that cool?” I asked.

“Violet, I don’t want to miss the DJ set. We better be back in time.” Mars said.

“We will.” I said pulling David along toward Mars’s car.

At that time, my friend Mars drove a souped up 1974 Cadillac Fleetwood he got painted in canary yellow. He had painted the vinyl top himself in fuschia. To say this car stood out was an understatement. I pulled David’s tipsy ass into the backseat and jumped in the shotgun position next to Mars. I told Mars as we drove down Belmont to stop at a 7 Eleven to pick David up a coffee to sharpen him up a bit. I was glad he didn’t drink too much of the moonshine.

“Here. Drink.” I said handing the coffee to David.

“Thanks.” David said.

“Why would you attempt further grounding by doing this stunt?” I asked.

“I dunno. I was supposed to go tonight before I got detention and a D in Algebra. Now I feel stupid. I’m sorry Violet.” David said.

“You know, I did a lot of stupid shit when I was your age. I’m pissed off at you because I don’t want you to do those same mistakes. You’re a bright kid, David. Don’t fuck that up. You a lot going for you.” I said.

“You’re right. I feel like shit.” David said.
“What you mean like shit? Sick?” I asked.

“He better not puke in this car, I just had my baby detailed.” Mars said in a panic.

“No. No. No. Just about tonight. Again I’m sorry.” David said.

“Ok. Enough apologies. Go home and sleep it off. If you need to know. You’re forgiven. Jesus.” I said.

We passed Cicero avenue and I was immediately brought back to memories of the old neighborhood. This is where I grew up. Where Diane and I would leave Foreman high school and head over to my house where we would smoke cigarettes and talk about our adventures with boys. Where on one occasion, experimented with each other. Diane was a touchy subject for me to talk about because at that time I felt betrayed. When she joined Terror it was like I lost my partner in crime. She was a different person after that.

“Where the fuck are we? Is this Des Plaines?” Mars asked annoyed.

“This is STILL Chicago. Were nowhere near Des Plaines. He’s about ten more minutes away.” I assured him.
We better not be late, Violet. I’m holding you to that.” Mars said.

“We’ll make it.”
